The goal of the Hospice Manager Certificate Program HMCP™ is to provide managers and mid-level supervisors the core business operating principles and tools necessary to successfully manage a hospice program. This program is designed to improve your coaching skills, build your management team, understand the new hospice conditions of participation and state laws impacting your agency. Learn the fundamentals of budgeting, financial management, compliance, marketing, regulatory and human resources of entry level hospice managers.
Certification Examination - Separate Registration Required
Only approved candidates meeting specified criteria through a formal application process will be allowed to participate in the certification examination. Please note that separate registration is required for the certification examination. In order for candidates to take the exam, candidates must have been deemed eligible through a formal application process. After the application has been accepted, candidates may then register and pay for the certification examination. Detailed examination registration instructions will be included in the acceptance correspondence. Part I: The Regulatory Maze 1 Overview of the manager’s role in with regulations, what the distinctions of federal, state and local regulations impacting hospice providers, including workman’s comp issues and compliance guidelines.
Part II: The Regulatory Maze 2 Detailed review of specific licensure and certification regulations, accreditation bodies, and government oversight bodies. Specific Nuts & Bolts© and interpretive guidelines for Medicare conditions of participation, IDGs and other care planning activities.
Part III: Regulatory Guidelines & Key Business Practices Detailed review of the distinction between licensure versus certification, relationship between CMS and DHS, who the hospice fiscal intermediaries are, and the survey process.
Part IV: Highlights of the New Hospice Conditions of Participation...The Sky is NOT Falling The new hospice CoPs went into effect in 2008. This section highlights changes in the regulations, including Subpart C: Patient Care, Subpart D: Organizational Environment, and QAPI.
Part V: Technical Regulations Detailed review of the Medicare Hospice Conditions of Participation: election periods, certification of terminal illness, inpatient levels of care, physician verbal orders, QAPI, PIP and the board’s role.
Part VI: Budgeting Principles Not just for the CFO! Overview of basic budgeting principles a manager must be familiar with regardless of the size of the organization: what is a budget, how it is developed, how to project performance and monitoring “budget” vs “actual” activities.
Part VII: Financial Management for the Hospice Manager Not just for the CFO or finance department! Helps the hospice manager get acquainted with common hospice operational trends, fundamentals of finance and accounting, reimbursement basics and billing .
Part VIII: Telling the Story of the Organizations Activity Not just for the CEO or CFO! Hospice manager’s learn to use the budget as a tool to “tell the story” about their agency’s performance – common vocabulary, chart of accounts, activity and operational trends.
Part IX: Beyond the Income Statement Part 1 Not just for the CFO! Managers learn about accounts receivables, collections, accounts payables and cash and why these are important to the hospice manager.
Part X: Beyond the Income Statement Part 2 Not just for the boss! Hospice managers learn about the balance sheet, financial statements, operational reports and what data is most important for them to hone in on.
Part XI: Coaching for Success Part 1 Hospice managers and other leaders must know how to coach for their staff and organization to succeed. The fundamentals of coaching and how to apply in day-to-day work setting will be reviewed.
Part XII: Coaching for Success Part 2 The 5 C’s of coaching will be reviewed, and practice tools will be presented to improve the hospice manager’s coaching abilities.
Part XIII: HR Practices and Employment Law Overview Detailed overview of hiring, disciplinary and wage and hour laws in California. (General principles apply to other states, but specific-state laws should be reviewed.)
Part XIV: HR Practices and Law Continued Review of complaints and investigations, leaves and termination issues will be presented with some specific case examples in California. (General principles apply to other states, but specific-state laws should be reviewed.)

Jeannee Parker Martin President and co-owner of The Corridor Group, Inc., Jeannee Parker Martin is an internationally known leader in the development of innovative healthcare programs. Active in health service planning, development and delivery of care since the late-1970’s, Jeannee has assisted organizations around the world ─ spanning the US, Central and South America, Thailand, and Turkey. She was the only home care and hospice expert to consult with the WHO Global Programme on AIDS in 1989, and for the US Department of State in South Africa in 2002.
Claire Tehan As the founder and CEO of TrinityCare Hospice for 28 years, Ms. Tehan has extensive experience in all aspects of hospice operations within a home health agency as well as multi-hospital system. She is known for her leadership in the development of innovative programs, including AIDS case management, pediatric hospice care, and an inpatient palliative care consultation team in partnership with two community hospitals. Claire successfully integrated four hospice programs into TrinityCare Hospice. Her expertise also includes strategic planning and change management.
Betsy Gornet Betsy has over 20 years experience in strategically leveraging financial and operational assets to fulfill a health care organization’s mission and vision. She has experience in managing and leading health care organizations across the continuum of care, including acute and specialty hospitals, long-term care, physician practices, home health and hospice. She has managed budgets ranging from $2–$500 million in both for-profit and not-for-profit environments.
Elizabeth Murphy is a native of Los Angeles, and has been practicing law since 1994. Ms. Murphy specializes in the defense of employers, in the full range of employment matters, including: advising employers regarding everyday situations that arise, such as how to fire someone, how much leave employees are entitled to, etc.; helping employers to prepare or update employee manuals; defending employers in wage and hour actions, class action cases, and wrongful termination cases; and providing training and educational programs to employers.

What to Expect after Registration
Once your registration has been received and processed, you will receive a separate confirmation email within 48 hours of registration. The email will contain your login information and website of the CAHSAH On-Demand Training Portal. You will also receive coordinating handout materials within 3-5 days via FedEx for this program. You have a total of three (3) months to view this program.

Certificate of Completion and Continuing Education Hours (CE)
Continuing Education Hours will be provided to participants who view the program in its entirety. Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (Provider # CEP2463) and by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (Provider # PCE588) for up to fifteen and one half (15.5) contact hours of continuing education. A request for Certificate of Completion will send with materials to send in once program has been completed. Please allow 1-2 weeks for your certificate to arrive.
