CAHSAH has recently analyzed data from the 2011 Annual Utilization Report of Home Health Agencies/Hospices compiled by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD). We were then able to add this data to our series dating back to 1996. This allows us to look at ten-year trends (2001-2011) for California?s home health industry. Hospice data are not reflected in this analysis but will be analyzed in a future report. The data in this analysis include licensed home health agencies and licensed home health agencies with hospices. They do not include data for organizations which are not licensed as home health agencies such as home care aide organizations. The analysis includes the following categories:

During 2011, hospice utilization continued its growth for two years after experiencing a decline in 2009. Evidence of this growth can be seen in the total number of visits which grew 2.1 percent to 5,209,649 total visits. Total days grew 20.7 percent to 8,370,160 days and total gross revenue grew 19.4 percent to $1,580,238,859.
The analysis of hospice utilization trends is based on data reported to the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) from the Annual Utilization Report of Home Health Agencies/Hospices for the years 2002 through 2011. CAHSAH?s December Bulletin reported on home health ten-year trends. What follows is an analysis of the 2011 hospice data which is the most recent data that has been reported and includes the following categories:
